German Social Security Contributions:
Individuums employed in Germany have to contribute to the below mentioned insurances (exceptions possible due to totalization agreements or German social law).
The contribution is paid half by the employer and half by the employee. The amount of total contribution is limited by monthly and annual ceiling amounts. For the year 2004 the following total contribution rates apply:
Pension insurance: 19.5 %
Unemployment insurance: 6.5 %
Health insurance 13 - 15 % (depending on health insurance company)
Care insurance: 1.7 %
The ceiling amounts for pension and unemployment insurance are depending on wether your work is performed in former West or former East Germany. The ceiling amounts are the following:
Former West Germany:
Pension/unemployment insurance: 5,150 € per month or 61,800 € per year,
Health/care insurance: 3,487€ per month or 41,850 € per year
Former East Germany:
Pension/unemployment insurance: 4,350 € per month or 52,200 € per year
Health/care insurance: 3,487€ per month or 41,850 € per year
To calculate your own payable contribution please insert your monthly gross salary. (To calculate the whole contribution of employee and employer you have to multiply the results by 2). Work performed in West Germany is assumed.
